5 Tips for an Epic Family Photo Session!

Planning your annual family photo session can be stressful. So stressful that some parents choose not to do it. I’m here to show you that it does not have to be that way! Here are my top 5 tips for guaranteeing you have an enjoyable experience so you can start saving your pennies and book a session for those dreamy family photos you’ve always imagined!

Tip #1 - What do we wear?

When you find the Photographer that you want to work with, ask questions. One of your first questions should be “what should we wear?”. You know you’ve found the right person if they provide you detailed information and suggestions on where to look for clothing options. Some photographers also have a Client Wardrobe with a variety of options for every member of your family. Trust them! Mamas, if you are comfortable wearing jeans then by all means see what you can do to dress up your best Levi’s. However, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and opt for the flowy dress! At first you may feel uncomfortable and awkward but give it 10 minutes and you will see why your Photographer suggested the DRESS. Jeans or pants (at least for the ladies) are stiff and your images will feel as such. Dresses offer movement from the elements and you interacting with your kiddos. Trust your Photographer! If your Photographer has no suggestions then you might rethink who you are working with. ;)

Tip #2 - Choose the right location

Do you want to travel and have views of the mountain peaks? Or do you want wide open sun soaked tall grassy fields? The choice is yours but do ask your Photographer if they have location suggestions in mind that will align with your vision. Keep in mind that we as Photographers have a goal to create imagery that you will want to display on your walls. So, keep that in mind as well. What will look great with your home decor? There are several factors that need to be considered before deciding on a location but the most important of those is how the lighting will affect the outcome of your portraits. Often times clients will have a special location in mind for their family portraits and that is perfectly fine, just run it by your photographer or ask them if they have places they can suggest. Plan on a little bit of travel if you opt for your professional’s locations as we love the epic scenery!

Tip #3 - Timing is everything!

Check the weather a couple of days before your scheduled session. Your photographer will be checking as well. Ask your photographer what type of skies they prefer. There is nothing worse that totally overcast and cloudy days, IMO. I personally prefer sunshine and a few clouds for a dramatic sky! Weather is a big factor and so is the time of day. Always plan on a late evening session usually about an hour before sunset for the best lighting conditions. If your Photographer wants to shoot at noon then you may wan to request samples of their work that they’ve taken at that time of day. If late evening poses a problem for the babies or kiddos then throw in a late afternoon nap so you can make the schedule happen.

Tip #4 - We are here to play!

While most of us Photographers will definitely grab a few posed smiling looking at the camera photos, for the most part we love the candids! Be ready to play with your kiddos and really interact with them. Another of our goals is to capture the love and emotion of you and your family. Ignore the camera and adventure with your kiddos and your spouse. Relax and enjoy the moment.

Tip #5 - Have Fun!

As parents we always want our children to be on their best behavior. We want them to listen, behave, sit still, and impress the strangers. I’m here to tell you that all rules are out when it comes to your family photo session! We are here to have fun! Relax and let the kids run wild! Your Photographer will have games to play and prompts to reel the kiddos back in. Please don’t stress. If you relax then your babies will relax and have some fun. Let the kids be, don’t scold them for not behaving to your standards. Your photos will reflect the love you have as a family if you just have fun!

Kody West | Rifle High School Class of 2020

HUGE shoutout to the Rifle High School Class of 2020 as they celebrate their graduation this Saturday with a Motorcade Processional through downtown Rifle. Times are certainly unique and unfortunate for Seniors but we will celebrate them the best way we can.

Among those Seniors walking (or rather, driving) this weekend is Kody West. Kody has missed singing and putting together music with RHS’s Varsity and Men’s Choirs the most during quarantine. He’s been done with school for a while now and was really looking forward to hanging with friends and making music for the last couple of months. Sorry, Kody! Kody plans to attend CMU in the fall and is looking forward to the adventures ahead!

Congrats, Kody! GO BEARS!

Hayley Wood | Coal Ridge Class of 2020

Congratulations to all of the Coal Ridge Class of 2020 Graduates!

Another high school graduation is upon us and it’s pretty safe to say that this is one we will all remember for the rest of our lives. One day, the children will be discussing the year 2020 in their history classes. It’s been a wild ride for these Seniors and I can only wish them all the best on their new journeys.

Hayley is a Coal Ridge High School Senior who has already received her diploma. She didn’t get to attend a formal graduation ceremony with all of her peers, family and friends. Instead, she walked quietly alone across a stage receiving school admin handshakes and her parents in the background secretly shedding tears. She turned to the empty gymnasium, flipped her tassel and smiled into the video camera. Hayley will officially graduate this Sunday, May 17th at 1:00pm via a video that will be streamed to the public through the Coal Ridge Facebook page.

Miss Hayley expressed to me that the hardest part of the past few quarantine months has been not being able to hang and talk with her friends at school every day. She has really missed the social interaction more than anything. She’s kept busy at home with online distance learning and baking. She loves to bake! Hayley is looking forward to the fall when she will attend CSU for Music Education, another love she is very passionate about.

Good luck to you, Hayley!! I wish you all the best in your new journey after all the craziness!

xoxo,

Carrie

Harding Lake Alaska Wedding | Kyla + Ricky

As most of you already know, I recently had the pleasure to travel to ALASKA to photograph Kyla and Ricky’s wedding alongside my BFF (Katie Landers). It was incredible!  Having only been to Alaska one other time in my life I had imagined a wedding at the base of majestic snowy mountain peaks with bears and caribou roaming nearby.  Haha!  That is pretty far from what the wedding actually was.  Those who say everything is bigger in Texas obviously haven’t been to Alaska. ALASKA is HUGE and beautiful at every bend in the road (all 3 of them), lol.  It was beautiful!  All week long while exploring I was in Photographer heaven!  While a migraine hindered my willingness to get out and shoot, I already have plans to return and photograph all the incredible locations on my bucket list.

Anyway, this blog post isn’t about me - I’ll save that one for another day.  This is about Kyla and Ricky’s special moments…

The two were wed at Camp Bingle on Harding Lake, Alaska which is near Fairbanks for those who need a formal location to pinpoint.  Tucked back into the birch trees they prepared for the wedding day in the local cabins and said I do along the waters edge.  Every single moment of the day went off without a hitch. All sorts of weather changes rolled in and out throughout the day providing all sorts of temperatures and lighting changes. Kyla and Ricky looked incredible and it was a real joy getting to know their wonderful family and friends.

Katie and I wish you all the best on this new journey together!

Photos speak louder than words so please check out the images from their wedding day and leave them some love!

White Owl Ranch Wedding | Sam + Nick

Have you ever been to the White Owl Ranch in New Castle, CO? I hadn’t either until Sam & Nick’s wedding a few weeks ago. What an incredible venue! Quaint, rustic and seriously breathtaking views of the Colorado River Valley. I’d definitely consider this place a hidden gem in the wedding industry! Sam and Nick had a few ups and downs when choosing a venue and I’m so tickled that everything fell into place for the White Owl Ranch.

The weather was not the most ideal and threw several curve balls our way but this couple handled it with grace and embraced the day for what it was. I personally thought the rain was an amazing addition and made for some EPIC photos with super dramatic skies and colors.

I am so delighted to have had the opportunity to photograph these two genuine people and be able to call them friends. It was a day for the books!

Congratulations, Sam & Nick!

Mesa Lakes Wedding | Alisha + Dan

Planning a destination wedding can be such a fun experience if you have the right friends and professionals in your corner. Alisha and Dan were wed on August 18th at the beautifully rustic Mesa Lakes Lodge and they planned it all from their home in Oregon! Luckily, they had plenty of help from local friends and family to see to it that everything was prepared exactly to their liking.

It was such a pleasure getting to know the adorable couple and their loved ones. Alisha’s smile and laughter is infectious and she brought so much excitement to the party!

Allie and Henny Penny | A Day in the Life

My sweet little Niece, Allie, loves her chickens! She’s got her very own “Hen House” and flock of ladies to collect eggs from daily. We went to visit Allie and her family for my Brother and Dad’s birthday party this past weekend. I have been wanting to photograph little Al with her chickens so I took a dress and my camera gear along. After dinner I asked Al if I could take her picture and she told me “NO” in true Allie fashion. It took little bit of convincing and bribery before she finally said yes, haha!

The mini photoshoot didn’t last long but we had a lot of fun. Even more fun chasing the chicken back to the coop!

Love you, Al Pal!

Maroon Bells Elopement | Kaitlin + Luke

What better place on earth for an elopement than Maroon Bells!  Kaitlin and Luke planned their destination wedding from their home in North Carolina and they did an incredible job!  Despite the smoke in the air from local Colorado fires, the Bells was breathtaking as usual.  Following their midday ceremony we ventured to the streets of downtown Aspen where we found even more beautiful backdrops and amazing people who cheered them on as we walked around town.  The day was perfect in every aspect!  If you or anyone you know is thinking of eloping then I highly suggest planning your day at the Majestic Maroon Bells!

Congrats, Kaitlin & Luke!
