- Be My Valentine -

Kate and Paul came all the way from Toronto Ontario Canada to be married at Powderhorn Mountain Resort on Valentine's Day!  The day was absolutely beautiful and perfect in every way!  The love these two have for each other was astonishing and I will never forget the moment I actually met Paul in person (up until the wedding date we had only been able to Skype) and the first thing I said to him was "your bride looks looks gorgeous" and Paul says to me "Yea, she is!".  I knew from that moment on that this day was going to be so much fun!

Due to the lack of sun and the opportunity for the Bride and Groom to jump right into the party following nuptials, the lovely coupled opted for a "first look" and to do all of the group and formal photos prior to the ceremony.  By doing so, we had so much time for the fun stuff!  I had a hard time choosing photos for the blog post so bare with me because there are many!

Last but not least, a couple of quick shout outs for all those who worked so closely with Kate and Paul remotely to put on the special day.

DeAna + Qionn | Grand Junction Engagement Photographer

Downtown Grand Junction is the perfect setting for any photo session if you appreciate the urban feel.  Especially when the weather is chilly and the trees haven't quite begun to show signs that spring has sprung.  That's where I took these two love birds on a brisk February afternoon.  This is DeAna and Qionn.  A newly engaged couple who has proved to me that long distance relationships can and really do work.  Qionn is a Sailor stationed in Japan while his beautiful bride to be is a student at CMU.  Both are from the Front Range so you can imagine how tickled I was to photograph an out of town couple!

My little family heads to the Bahamas!

So let me just start out by saying that the Bahamas is definitely a GORGEOUS place worth seeing at some point in your life.  I hope that I can return one day but it probably won't be until my children are older or I get to leave them at home.  It was certainly a struggle for this mama to travel nearly 2,000 miles from Colorado to Abaco, Bahamas with an almost 3 year old and a 16 month old in tow.  My mother, father, brother and sister-in-law were all as much help as they could be (and I'm grateful) but they too were on vacation to enjoy themselves and get away from the every day hustle and bustle.  This was a vacation for the books in all aspects.  Remember Murphy's Law, 'anything that can go wrong - will go wrong'?  This was our vacation to a T!  To spare you lengthy details here is my short version of the bahamian chaos:  It started with fraudulent activity on the VRBO website and all of our money to reserve our vacation home was hacked by terrorists in London (problem was eventually resolved but not with a happy ending for all).   Then my mother came down with pneumonia less than a week before we were set to depart (she felt well enough to travel but probably shouldn't have). Tthe day before our flight my youngest turns up sick with a runny nose and a fever, the same evening I get a call from AA that our flight for 6:30 the next morning had been cancelled due to inclement weather in Dallas and after several hours on the phone (thank you mom) we were placed on a flight departing at 6:30 pm but we now were faced with a 4 hour layover in Phoenix.  We arrived in Nassau, Bahamas just after 9 am and still had to catch one more flight to our destination island.  We missed our flight, thanks AA.  The next one was not scheduled until 6 pm!  We were all exhausted from flying all night and the little ones slept maybe 2 hours on the plane.  Oh well, it is what it is and we then had to wait another 8 hours at the airport.  Shortly after receiving the news we were all resting on park benches in a cute little courtyard of the airport when my two year old suddenly starts screaming that ants were bitting her toes.  She was screaming hysterically and no one could find any sign of bugs.  We decided to go get a hotel room so my girls could rest for the next several hours and get out of the heat but even a couple hours later and my daughter was still crazy out of her mind.  So bad in fact that I ended up taking her to a bahamian emergency room where nurses and staff were convinced that a stranger in the airport had possibly drugged my child.  She needed rest but as any caring mother would do, I wanted her checked to be sure.  After all, we were hanging out in the courtyard surrounded by foreign plants and I wasn't so sure that she hadn't gotten into something poisonous.

After the fiasco at the hospital we were finally back on a quick 20 min flight to Abaco and arrived just after dark.  Go figure, I had to wait another 12 hours for the sun to come up before I could even see my beautiful surroundings.  I couldn't wait though, I was up with the sun!!  Now on to the fun part....

The house was HUGE and stunning for ocean front property!  We had ocean on both sides of us.  The view above was right out my bedroom door and I could look straight down into the water.  That's where I snapped the photo of this little fella.

DSC03391DSC03422

We had a private and quaint little beach just on the other side where my girls spent most of their time looking for seashells.  It was a great beach for shell hunting and there were no waves which I was thrilled about because the undertow can be so scary.  In fact, the water was so shallow that you could walk for a quarter of a mile and it only came up to your waist.

My brother (Kaye Donne) spent some time hand fishing in the shallow waters and turned up with a barracuda on more than one occasion.

Of course I couldn't go on vacation and not enjoy myself just a little bit (everyday)!   Cheers!

I spent a lot of the time close to the house just for the safety of my little ones but finally ventured out with the family to the other side of the island to a little place called Petes Pub.  That's where we found all of these fun creatures.  The girls even had hermit crab races with their adventurous uncle!

IMG_1658IMG_1648IMG_1637IMG_1560After Pete's pub we ventured even farther to a place called Cherokee Sound.  This is by far the most beautiful, desolate place I have ever been.  Almost spooky.  Mom and I walked out to the end of one of the docks that extend a long ways out into the water.

When we got to the end she had spotted a Conch shell in the water and so badly wanted to take it home.  When she finally reached the surface with the shell we found these gross little things inside!

DSC03369DSC03372DSC03360One of the first things I did when I found out we were going to the Bahamas was I booked a family Photographer!  My little family trio was in need of fall pictures anyway so I decided just to wait and hire someone to capture our fun away from home.  That Photographer was Susan Davis with Frangipani Photography.  We met her at the ferry one morning and she rode with us to Hopetown, a the cutest island with bright colorful homes and business all packed in around the harbor and the famous lighthouse.  There was no where to shop for boutique clothing on Abaco island so I dressed myself and girls for fun.  I knew we would be playing on the beach so there was no sense in getting all dolled up, we needed to fit the part.  I packed my camera with me so that I could sight see and snap photos of my own but Susan could see how bad I was struggling with two toddlers at my ankles.  When she sent me the images to review a week later I was so tickled to see that she had captured the scenery and details for me!  I will say it again, she was AMAZING and so much fun!  My girls and I had a blast and I have already ordered hundreds of dollars worth of artwork for our walls.

Carson's Birth Story | St. Mary's Hospital | Grand Junction CO

Baby Carson was born on November 5th, 2013.  His birth story is nothing short of a miracle.  His parents, Kahli and Tom, were faced with many obstacles over the past couple of years trying to conceive and at one point or another were even convinced that they may never.  When a couple goes through the trials of trying to conceive then emotions are running especially high come delivery (I know this from personal experience).  Kahli (ok, who am I kidding calling her Kahli.  I know her as Kat!), I mean Kat, made the ultimate decision at literally the 11th hour to have me capture Carson's birth story.  I arrived at the hospital just around 11:30 pm and little Carson arrived shortly after.  Please take a moment to watch his beautiful birth story.  The video here is a shortened version just so we don't bore you.  ha ha!  Also please be advised that the video is for a mature audience and if a little blood makes you woozy then you might want to stick with the disney channel.

Jenna and Shelby:  The Proposal

March 31st, 2013

I copied this straight from their website where you can read their entire story and get details about their wedding at http://shelbyandjenna.ourwedding.com

March 31, 2013 happened to be Easter Sunday.  Shelby and I got up a little earlier than normal so we could go to my sister Nicole's house and watch my nieces and nephew look for Easter eggs.  After wandering the yard for a bit I looked at Shelby from across the yard and noticed he had an Easter basket in his hands.  As I got closer I noticed several colorful plastic eggs in the basket.  He gave me the basket and told me they were mine, and that the Easter bunny brought it for me.  I looked closer at the eggs and noticed they had numbers on them, numbered 1-4.  It was then that I realized what he was doing.  I opened up the first egg and a piece of paper along with a chocolate kiss was inside.  The paper read "Will."  I immediately started shaking and a huge smile was planted on my face.  I proceeded to open the other 3 each one had a chocolate kiss and a slip of paper, the others reading "You", "Marry", "Me".  I looked up from the basket and saw him down on one knee in front of me.  The moment was all too fast but I heard him say "Jenna, will you marry me?"  Of course I said yes and gave him a huge hug and kiss.  I looked around the yard forgetting for a moment that we were still in the middle of our Easter egg hunt and noticed my family clapping and congratulating us.  My mom was snapping pictures and trying her best not to cry.  I was one of the most special moments to date and am so excited to start my life with Shelby.heart

Keira + Troy | Engagements | Palisade Colorado

Troy and Keira:  The Beginning

Troy and Keira met one evening through mutual friends but it wasn't until a few weeks later when Troy friended Keira on Facebook and a friendship began.  They started hanging out and after a few months things escalated into something much more.  Troy proposed to Keira on may 6th, 2013 which happened to be their 3rd anniversary. He told her that he had something for her to look at in his taxidermy shop and when she entered the shop she saw a bouquet of roses on the counter.  When she got closer she found her ring in the middle of a rose. When she turned around to look at him he popped the question!

The wedding is set for June 7th, 2014!

Josh + Callie | Engagements | Grand Junction Colorado

Josh and Callie have been acquaintances since their days of high school.  They never really hung out or talked much but shortly after Callie bought a house in Fruita in 2012 they ran into one another at JD's bar.  They were sitting at the bar talking and throwing back drinks when someone overheard what they thought was Josh asking Callie to marry him!  (didn't really happen) but the two of them went along with it and Callie announced to the intoxicated crowd that they had indeed just gotten engaged!  The folks at the bar made her a "ring" out of a pink drinking straw and after their make-believe proposal they were inseparable.

July 20th, 2013

"The Real Proposal"

Josh and Callie had dinner plans with her best friend and her husband and before their meal they took a drive on the monument.  They stopped at a few spots to take pictures and then made their way to Escante Canyon.  Here is where Josh dropped to one knee and popped the question!  There was more to the surprise!  Josh wouldn't let Callie call any of her friends or family and asked her to give it a day or two to sink in.  Well, when they got to her friends house they walked in the door and all of their friends and some family were there to yell Congratulations!  Callie instantly started crying tears of joy!

The last surprise was that Josh had Callie's friend, Wendy, hiding in the bushes during the proposal taking pictures of the engagement.

Way to go Josh!!  Props to you buddy!  You pulled off this proposal flawlessly!

The wedding is set for May 3rd, 2014

Hank + Ashley | Engagements | Grand Junction Colorado

Every couple has a love story, here is Hank and Ashley's!
Hank and Ashley first met at Pork & Hops in 2012 through mutual friends.  They never exchanged phone numbers but were both pleasantly surprised when Hank strolled through the door while Ashley was out for a girls night about a month later. They've been together ever since. The combination of city girl/snowmobiler and country boy/team roper is nothing that either of them could have imagined for themselves but it couldn't have turned out any better!  As the story goes, opposites attract!  Hank proposed to Ashley on Sept. 14th, 2013 at the CPRA Finals.  Hank had been planning the proposal for a few months and had included their local family, friends, 1,000 rodeo fans and the best rodeo clown ever!  The evening was pulled off flawlessly, Ashley never had a clue what was going on around her until he hit his knee.
The wedding is scheduled for 2/22/14 which is a sentimental number to Ashley, as 222 used to be her competitor number when she raced snowmobiles.
I have the wonderful pleasure of capturing the love on their wedding day and spent an afternoon shooting their engagements.  Check them out!
Special thanks to my dear friend Katie from Katie Landers Photography for assisting me and providing me with many laughs during their session!
