Katie Mae | Grand Junction Newborn Photographer

Earlier this past winter I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding for a couple in Snowmass, Colorado and just recently that same couple was blessed with a healthy baby girl!  Katie Mae was born on June 5th @ 3:20 am, weighing in at 7 lbs 15 oz. and measuring 20.5 inches tall!  Her parents came to visit me in the studio about a week after her arrival and we were able to capture some beautiful images.  My favorite part of Photography is the relationship I build with my clients and seeing their families year after year.

Welcome to the world, baby Katie!  I can't wait to watch you grow!

Mox + Courtney | Palisade Colorado Wedding Photographer

I'm terrible at writing for my blog so I'm trying something a little different and I asked Courtney and Mox to share their love story with us!  Here goes....

From the Bride:  I actually don't remember meeting Mox the first time. It was the 3rd of July and I was subbing for a friend on Mox's kickball team. The group went out for drinks after the game and I do remember fireworks, but not the kind that Mox had hoped for! He remembered me and somehow we ended up with a bunch of mutual friends a few days later celebrating Mox's birthday. A month later I was a regular on the kickball team and we began to hang out as a team on a weekly basis. It wasn't until the end of August when a group of us all went to the Mumford and Sons concert at Red Rocks that I knew I really liked this guy - who doesn't want a gentleman to walk her to the porta potty! We had already shared our first kiss before we had our first official date together in early September. From the very beginning, it was all so comfortable and so natural to just be ourselves together - I didn't even freak when he bought me a ticket to meet his family in Minnesota only a month or so after dating - something he's never done with any other girl! He said I love you first but we both were already madly in love and though we never really talked about it, we both just knew that this was it. On Memorial Day weekend 2014, I was recovering from bronchitis and begrudgingly agreed to take a hike above Lake Dillon. It was above the lake where he proposed and I was so taken back, I tripped over a rock and nearly tumbled down the mountain! Of course I said yes!

After an engagement party, a trip to New York, India, Thailand, and China - the wedding planning began. We knew we wanted to have the wedding in Colorado and to make it somewhat of a destination, so we decided to scope out the Western Slope. We instantly fell in love with the area. After seeing only two venues, we knew that Maison la Belle Vie was the one - it was large enough to accommodate our huge family, yet quaint enough to feel intimate and cozy.

Mox and I both worked together on nearly every aspect of the wedding, from the DIY save the dates and invitations, to the small details like the homemade lavender soap favors! I know grooms who sit back and allow their brides to take the reigns, but Mox being so involved made the entire process so easy and fun! Someone actually said to me "I don't know whether to be worried or impressed about how laid back you are!" We tried to enjoy every minute of the planning - the countless hours we spent punching holes and gluing together invitations (all the while drinking red wine from the venue, of course!), the painstaking process of reupholstering our vintage chairs (an amazing $10 find at Goodwill), sweating bullets while potting herbs in the parking lot of our Grand Junction hotel the day before the wedding, and even the "worst" part of any wedding planning - the cupcake tasting:) We could not have seen our vision come to fruition without the help of my bestie Danielle (who needs to follow her calling of being a wedding coordinator extraordinaire). She spent the morning filling the mason jars with lavender bundles, stacking the lemons, lining up the place cards, setting the gorgeous sweeheart table and every other little detail. One tiny snag - our wedding officiant's office flooded and our marriage license was destroyed. So weren't official until after the honeymoon! If that's the worst that could happen I'd say the day was a success.

It couldn't have gone any smoother otherwise! A wedding will go where it wants to go based on the tone set by the bride and groom - the little things that every bride thinks will matter, in the end, work out exactly the way they are supposed to. At the end of the day, I got to marry my best friend and that's the most important thing of all!

Here is a little DIY Wedding inspiration for those brides who like to have a little more control!  Ty and Aprille were married this past September at the beautiful Flying Dog Ranch in Carbondale, Colorado.  As you can see from the photos, the ranch fits any rustic country theme complete with breathtaking views of Mt. Sopris.  It was important to the bride and groom that most of their decor have a personal touch from family and friends.  Everyone chipped in to help out and almost all of the decorations were put together by hand, even the alter and the cake stand!

How to Photograph Fireworks Using a DSLR Camera OR your phone

How to take stellar Firework photos using your DSLR!

Independence day is only a few short days away and I know you are dying to catch those amazing firework displays on camera!  Here is a quick tutorial for beginners on using your DSLR to capture those bursts of joy!

You will need:

A DSLR Camera

A Tripod

A Remote Release (optional)

*Before we get started, remember the 3 elements of your camera that you will need to set accordingly are the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed.*

How To:

1.  Use a Tripod.  The most important tip to remember when trying to capture fireworks on camera is that your digital camera needs to be secure and free from movement or camera shake.  This is important because you will be using longer shutter speeds which will capture the movement of the fireworks but it will also pick up any other movements to the camera itself.  If you don’t have a tripod then simply find a sturdy location to set your camera on like perhaps a solid table.

2.  To achieve a perfectly still image it’s best to use a remote control release to trigger the shutter on your camera but it’s not entirely necessary.  You can still fire your camera by pressing the shutter button but be sure to be quick and and as still as possible to avoid moving the camera.

3.  Scope out your location.  Firework displays typically last several minutes so get a feel for where the most sparks are flying and frame your shot accordingly.

4.  Shoot in manual mode (M).  This way you have complete control over the settings on your camera.  Also shoot in manual focus, this will allow you to focus in on the first few fireworks and leave your focus set for the next ones to come.  Manual focus can be adjusted directly on the lens itself.

5.  Once your camera is set to manual mode (M) and you have locked in your area of focus, set the aperture.  (you may need to get out your instruction manual if you are not familiar with where the aperture setting is located on your camera).  What aperture should you use?  Experiment with apertures but I find that the smaller range tend to work really well.  I would shoot somewhere around f/16.  When you are in manual mode one of the dials on your camera should adjust your aperture and you should see the reading F16.

6.  More important that aperture is setting your shutter speed.  Fireworks are moving objects and you will need a fairly long shutter speed to capture this movement.  Check your cameras instruction manual if you are not familiar with where the shutter speed dial is located.  I typically like to shoot fireworks somewhere between 5-10 seconds.

7.  Shoot at a low ISO.  Stick to 100 or the lowest setting to avoid overexposing your images.

8.  Be sure to switch off your flash!

9.  Experiment and keep track of your results!  You are probably not going to get it right the first time so take a sample image and then adjust your settings accordingly.  The three settings to remember are ISO, Aperature, and Shutter Speed.  I find that leaving the ISO set low to 50 or 100 as well as your Aperature to f/16 will work just fine so pay attention to your shutter speeds!

Post your images to our Facebook page or tag us on Instagram so we can see all of your 4th of July Firework awesomeness!

Tips for capturing instagram worthy firework photos on your iPhone or Android device.

1.  Location - scout a spot with a good view of the fireworks show and choose your location upwind to prevent the smokey look from ruining your images.

2.  Be Still - if you aren’t using a tripod of some sorts then find something sturdy to lean against.  Your shots need to be as still as possible to avoid blurry photos.

3.  Lay off the shutter - The AE/AF lock which can be accessed by tapping your screen to focus and set the exposure will help to get a stellar firework shot if you can wait a few seconds.  Try using one firework to meter and then take your photo of the next burst.

4.  NO Flash, zoom or HDR - Don’t zoom in on the fireworks display because you loose resolution.  Ever notice how your images become slightly blurry and grainy when you zoom in too far?  Take the photos and crop them later.

5.  Try practicing first with a sparkler :)
